Tires are a vehicle’s only contact with the road. Even the brawniest engine, strongest brakes, or most advanced antiskid system, is at the mercy of the tire’s grip on the road. Every move a driver makes with the steering wheel or brake or gas pedal is transmitted to the road through the four post-it note-sized contact patches of the tires. Selecting the right tires for your driving needs is as important as selecting the right vehicle. Tires that are worn won’t be able to displace enough water to prevent hydroplaning. Performance tires won’t be able to get much grip in snow. All-season tires can’t manage the heat creased in high-speed driving. Nanaimo’s Steve Marshall Ford raised more than $1,800 for the Woodlands Secondary School’s senior girls basketball team in a unique fundraiser held last weekend.

The “Drive 1 4ur School” fundraiser saw the car company give $20 to the basketball team for every test drive that was taken in their cars during the event.

Carl MacDonald, coach of the basketball team, said there were 91 test drives taken and he really appreciates Steve Marshall Ford and the company’s contribution to the team.

Sherdan White, the company’s promotions manager, said the idea was to put more people behind the wheels of Ford vehicles in the hopes they will buy.

Switching off your lights is just one simple action that you can take to help make a difference and it sends a powerful message that we care about our planet.
Last year, Earth Hour was a huge success with over 4,600 cities, hundreds of landmarks and millions of people participating! In Canada more than half the adult population participated – over 10 million – in over 270 Canadian cities.

This year, the City of Nanaimo is continuing its support for raising awareness about what all of us can do, no matter how small, in saving energy and lowering greenhouse gas emissions in our community. Our everyday actions, like turning off unnecessary lights, add up to make a big difference. Individual action is also important because it sends a strong signal to business and government that Canadians want leadership from them too.

The City of Nanaimo will be participating in Earth Hour by challenging City staff to reduce energy consumption as much as possible during WWF Earth Hour on Saturday evening. Lights will be dimmed at the Vancouver Island Conference Centre and the City Hall. Ornamental lights will be turned off at Maffeo Sutton Park, reminders will be sent to staff to participate at home and work, etc.

What can you do to make Earth Hour happen in Nanaimo?

   Put together a small team of committed people and organizations to help plan how you can turn off the lights for one hour in your home or workplace.

On June 1st, 2 flags and 7,000 greeting in 12 books left Nanaimo for the troops in Afghanistan.

They were distributed to all the Canadian troop bases, including Forward Operation Bases(FOBs)through the chaplains.

This flag has travelled over 24,000 km. and is signed by 100 “heroes”-Canadian Forces from Army, Navy and Air, from Privates to Captains.

This flag was raised at the Kandahar Air Base,and went out on missions in Chinook helicopters.

It will be on display at various locations around Nanaimo this Spring 2011.

Last year, over $18,000 in prizes and scholarships was awarded to the winning schools and students. Each student on the top three teams will receive a scholarship to BCIT’s Motive Power Program and an Automotive Retailers Association scholarship to the post secondary institution of their choice. The winning school’s automotive department will also be presented with a Ford Focus courtesy of MSA Ford, Abbotsford and Steve Marshall Ford, Nanaimo.
