In Nanaimo, Tires are important not only for traction on the wet Nanaimo roads, proper tires are vital when it snows on Vancouver Island. You want your vehicle to be able to have traction in the rain, slush and ice!

The engine and brakes of a vehicle work directly through the tires. Even the most advanced traction and stability control systems are limited by the tire’s ability to hold the road. If a consumer has tires that are worn, under inflated, or not suited to the environment, they put themselves, their vehicle, and others at risk.

How much air pressure do my tires need?

Recommended tire pressure is clearly marked on the serial plate on the car or truck door; however, each vehicle is different.(i.e. 40psi)

Why is proper tire inflation crucial?

It provides efficiency and safety while driving

Insures that there is no overheating of the tires

On average the life of your tires will be greater

You will get optimal fuel mileage as well as the handling of your vehicle will be at its highest

Accurate tire pressure is important to insure the ability of minimum payloads and tow capacities.

38% of all vehicles have at least one Tire under inflated

Consumers should remember that fuel economy is dependant on proper air pressure. Monitoring air pressure regularly, and using proper inflation pressures as directed by the vehicle owner’s manual, is the best route to ensure maximum fuel economy and maximum tire life.

Regardless of Vancouver Island temperature, tires lose between 1-2 psi per month. In addition, for every 7 degrees Celsius drop in temperature, a tire will lose another pound of pressure. So a tire left unchecked from the time it was filled in warm June to 35 psi, is down 12psi in cooler November. That under inflation is going to hurt fuel economy, traction, and increase tire wear.

Tires are a vehicle’s most important safety feature

The engine and brakes of a vehicle work directly through the tires. Even the most advanced traction and stability control systems are limited by the tire’s ability to hold the road. If a consumer has tires that are worn, under inflated, or not suited to the environment, they put themselves, their vehicle, and others at risk.

Learn about the differences between All Season and Snow tires here.

Tire Safety

Tires are more important than you thought. Drivers rarely give tires a second thought, but choosing the right tire can be the difference between and a near miss and an accident. Getting the right tire for a vehicle starts with finding a knowledgeable new or used car dealer. One who can help you select the tire best for the intended use. Steve Marshall Ford’s Parts Department is knowledgeable and can find the perfect tire for your driving habits and vehicle, and also point out the pros and cons of each tire brand. There is a right tire for everyone, and it is our job to find the right tire for you.

For some consumers, the choice between tires comes down to price and availability or a decision based on appearance and reputation. When depending upon our Parts Department Staff you can learn how to purchase tires based on safety, quietness, road holding ability, and wear. Regardless of tire choice, it is necessary to understand why tires are so important.

Tires are a vehicle’s only contact with the road. Even the brawniest engine, strongest brakes, or most advanced antiskid system, is at the mercy of the tire’s grip on the road. Every move a driver makes with the steering wheel or brake or gas pedal is transmitted to the road through the four post-it note-sized contact patches of the tires. Selecting the right tires for your driving needs is as important as selecting the right vehicle. Tires that are worn won’t be able to displace enough water to prevent hydroplaning. Performance tires won’t be able to get much grip in snow. All-season tires can’t manage the heat creased in high-speed driving. Passenger-car tires might not be able to carry the heavy load found in a contractor’s pickup.

On Saturday, March 26, 2011 at 8:30 pm, the world will turn off its lights for just one hour – Earth Hour – to show it’s possible to take action on climate change.

Switching off your lights is just one simple action that you can take to help make a difference and it sends a powerful message that we care about our planet.
Last year, Earth Hour was a huge success with over 4,600 cities, hundreds of landmarks and millions of people participating! In Canada more than half the adult population participated – over 10 million – in over 270 Canadian cities.

This year, the City of Nanaimo is continuing its support for raising awareness about what all of us can do, no matter how small, in saving energy and lowering greenhouse gas emissions in our community. Our everyday actions, like turning off unnecessary lights, add up to make a big difference. Individual action is also important because it sends a strong signal to business and government that Canadians want leadership from them too.

The City of Nanaimo will be participating in Earth Hour by challenging City staff to reduce energy consumption as much as possible during WWF Earth Hour on Saturday evening. Lights will be dimmed at the Vancouver Island Conference Centre and the City Hall. Ornamental lights will be turned off at Maffeo Sutton Park, reminders will be sent to staff to participate at home and work, etc.

What can you do to make Earth Hour happen in Nanaimo?

Sign up / Build a Team
Put together a small team of committed people and organizations to help plan how you can turn off the lights for one hour in your home or workplace.

Spread the Word about Earth Hour Check out our downloads section at wwf.ca/earthhour

Make every hour Earth Hour – Consider what else can be done within your home and workplace to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

For more information on the City’s Earth Hour events and how to participate, contact either Bruce Joiner, Energy Manager or Rob Lawrance, Environmental Planner.
You can also go to BC Hydro Earth Hour link.

For 20 years, the BCAA, BCIT, and B.C. Ford Dealers’ Student Auto Skills Competition has been celebrating the high level of skill among young, aspiring auto technicians. Designed to encourage careers in the automotive industry and cultivate talent, the annual competition creates an opportunity for students to receive recognition for outstanding ability and performance in the field of automotive mechanics.

Last year, over $18,000 in prizes and scholarships was awarded to the winning schools and students. Each student on the top three teams will receive a scholarship to BCIT’s Motive Power Program and an Automotive Retailers Association scholarship to the post secondary institution of their choice.
Press Release:

April 30, 2010
BCAA, BCIT and BC Ford Dealers’ Auto Skills Competition celebrates 20 years of helping students achieve rewarding auto careers
Burnaby, BC: For 20 years, the BCAA, BCIT, and B.C.

On Saturday, May 1, the 20 most skilled automotive students from high schools across the province will rev up and compete in this year’s provincial BCAA, BCIT and B.C. Ford Dealers’ Student Auto Skills Competition at the BCIT Burnaby Campus from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

To qualify for the competition, students completed a written exam where they were challenged with automotive-related questions. Students representing high schools from Abbotsford, Coquitlam, Duncan, Maple Ridge, Penticton, Qualicum Beach, Salmon Arm, Terrace and Vancouver earned the 10 best test scores.

The hands-on competition consists of 10 two-student teams racing against a clock to diagnose and repair identically “bugged” malfunctions deliberately installed in vehicles. The team that successfully repairs the most bugs within the 90 minute time is declared the winner. In addition to providing a unique educational opportunity for the competing students, the Auto Skills Challenge highlights the current shortage of trained technicians in the automotive industry. Qualified automotive technicians are highly sought in today’s job market and the Challenge encourages Grade 12 students to complete their education and prepare for rewarding careers in the increasingly high-tech automotive field.

“With the addition of new technologies, today’s cars are extremely complex. Technicians working in the field are highly trained professionals who know more about vehicles than just the “nuts and bolts,”” says Student Auto Skills Committee Chair Allen Holmes. “Careers in the automotive service industry are extremely rewarding and challenging. A great deal of skill in mathematics, logistics, electrical, electronic, mechanical and engineering are required nowadays. Many auto technicians work with state-of-the-art computerized systems, electronics and other advanced technology such as GPS and Blue Tooth.”

Last year, over $18,000 in prizes and scholarships was awarded to the winning schools and students. Each student on the top three teams will receive a scholarship to BCIT’s Motive Power Program and an Automotive Retailers Association scholarship to the post secondary institution of their choice. The winning school’s automotive department will also be presented with a Ford Focus courtesy of MSA Ford, Abbotsford and Steve Marshall Ford, Nanaimo.

“Celebrating twenty years of hosting the Auto Skills Competition is further proof of BCIT’s ongoing commitment to providing the youth of British Columbia with hands-on training and applied work experience,” says Michael Coates, Director of Marketing and Business Development in the School of Transportation at BCIT. “This competition will provide these students with the opportunity to compete at BCIT’s Automotive Service Technician training facility, learn more about BCIT Automotive programs, and gain insight into how we collaborate with the automotive industry to train and prepare job-ready graduates.”

Each year many of the participants move on to promising careers in the automotive industry as a result of participating in the competition and the scholarships they win. The competition is co-sponsored by BCAA, BCIT and B.C. Ford Dealers and supported by various organizations dedicated to quality auto service.
